Description
High Grange Fire School, Devon. ICSA ‘Centre of Excellence’ for outdoor cookery and fire
High Grange Fire School and wellbeing centre, Devon.
High Grange is a family-run business located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Devon, run by Sara and husband Luke Mackay, a chef and wine merchant with over 20 years experience of cooking and teaching.
Originally from London, Luke was well known for his outdoor cookerys skills. Luke has been a chef and food writer for just over 20 years. He has a vast amount of knowledge and expertise, curated over the years whilst heading up the Borough Market Demo Kitchen and teaching at The London Barbecue School. As founder of two successful London-based businesses – Brompton Food Market and The Hour Glass in Kensington – you are sure to learn a thing or two in their rustic outdoor kitchen.
The family decided to pursue their culinary dreams and relocated to the culinary capital that is Devon in 2019. High Grange Fire School now boasts a large outdoor cookery school with fire pits, pizza oven, Vulcanus Grill, and every type of Kamado Joe. Offering Fire School days where you can learn the full gamut of British outdoor cooking.
Adjacent to the outdoor kitchen is their magical woodland dining area for feast nights, private dining and special events. Serving hyper-local and seasonal food sourced both from their own gardens and fantastic local suppliers.
During colder months they feast inside our cosy ‘Shippen’ outbuilding. This tranquil space is also home to their wellness events and classes including yoga, massage, sound baths and breath-work. They also offer creative masterclasses covering everything from dried flower arranging to growing your own vegetables.
They have already secured a series of awards including being named one of the Top 5 Barbecue Schools in the South West by Food Magazine and received a Gold Award by Devon Food & Drink and named Best Training School.

“The depth, knowledge of outdoor cooking shared by Luke is second-to-non. Luke’s experience with a wide range of outdoor cookery at all levels provides him and the students with impeccable knowledge and skills to adapt, and deliver an excellent range of cookery classes and outdoor experiences. Experience does not always guarantee to make a good teacher, however Luke’s ability to adapt and deliver clear concise instructions to his students, with excellent two way communications, was evident during our intensive assessment.” Inspector James Day.
